Designed by Walter Crickmay and built for George Burt on his Durlston estate in 1887 by William Masters Hardy's firm. The whole estate was for the enjoyment of the public, with a restaurant in the castle, the great globe, and the newly re-opened Tilly Whim caves.

The estate is now the Durlston Country Park and administered by DCC. With the help of lottery funding it is hoped the castle will be the centre piece of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, once more opening it's door to the public as George Burt intended,
